Day 1401- Linen Closet in Hall Bath

Three years, nine months, and thirty days… better late than never! We finally found a cabinet maker that was willing to work with us on this awkward space in our hall bathroom. In the previous configuration, a 40 gallon electric water heater was located here, partially behind a wall. Needless to say we went scorched earth on many parts of our demolition, and this was no exception. In the long interim, this small plastic shelving unit had stepped in to bridge the gap. It was time to level up.

As one might have guessed, global supply chain issues caused at least six weeks of delay for materials. Our initial estimate of six weeks of lead time turned into three months plus a few days.

One of the biggest considerations for the cabinet was its depth. We never installed baseboard behind the laundry area, not knowing exactly what would be installed later. The excitement is building!

(We love our Speed Queen washer and dryer!)

One miscalculation: the assembled cabinet would not swing through the doorway from the hall. The cabinet maker took it back to his shop for disassembly. We have overcome a few challenges, and while the additional delay was a bummer, it certainly wasn’t the end of the world.

Here is the new cabinet body assembled in place, snug as a bug in a rug.

We opted for two separate sides, one with pull out drawers on the right, and one with shallow shelves on the left. The theory was that the left side could accommodate our vacuum and cleaning supplies in the front area, while still allowing shelves in the back. Phillip explored his new hiding place as well!

Doors are installed! We tried to get as close as we could to our other cabinets, and while it isn’t an exact match, it is certainly livable in this utility space. The fitment couldn’t be more accurate. Next on the list was finding door pulls that matched our existing hardware.

There it is, the final product! We couldn’t find a match with our other hardware, and chose a similar shape in brushed nickel. Overall, we are very happy with this project, and now we can finish the bath with baseboards, and call this room complete.
