Day 628: Septic Tank Backup

December 26, 2019: a good back to back rain storm inundated our septic field, pic above related. How did we know there was an issue? Water was coming out from under our kitchen cabinets!

The culprit was a floor drain under our washing machine, and yes this is black water with scum from the septic tank 🙁

This is the drain in question, and being the third time backing up in less than 2 years it was time to find a solution.

While Carol was cleaning, Eric pulled the drain off and measured the diameter to try to find something to plug it with.

A line test plug wouldn’t clear under the washing machine, and we determined we didn’t want to plug the drain permanently. A clean out plug was bought and trimmed to size.

After the diameter was cut, the depth was trimmed to fit flush with the floor.

The epic mess cleaned up.

A positive test fit and it will work! Using a strong adhesive to mount the threaded ring.

After the adhesive cured, the plug was removed, and Teflon taped up. We survived 7 inches of rain in 4 days that tested us, and we were not able to use any water fixtures for over 24 hours. That fix is in the works, which will divert water around our lot.
