Day 900: Floating Desk

This project had been fomenting for years, and we finally pulled the trigger on ordering another butcher block slab. Which was tough during the Covid-19 pandemic as nearly all construction materials have been in short supply and up to 300% price increases. This type of slab was $329 when we bought our kitchen counters, and it was $549 at purchase in September 2020 🙁

We finally found a color palette that was “orderable” and just crossed our fingers as to when it would actually ship. Eric received a call and immediately drove to pick it up. Other tasks were paused to get this installed, as there was no safe place around the house to store this slab.

This is the unfinished wood we were hoping to receive when we ordered our kitchen counters.

Measurements were mocked up at each wall, as this will sit flush along the entire side of the room it is going to be installed. Our rail saw prior to clamping.

Two 1000 pound wall mounts from Rocklers were used, and were mounted to studs to give us a firm foundation. Phillip had to say goodbye to Mater though.

Cut to fit and installed. A light sand was given to the edges and surfaces, and we did not oil this to keep the light color character. A keen eye might spot our wire management location at the bottom right of the window frame.
