It was Sunday, July 11, when we were working in the backyard on our planter bed to vegetable garden project. Carol heard the hens making a racket, and set out to investigate…
Our nesting box was sealed off, and these three eggs were laid in the corner of the coop. It was time to act!
The nesting box was loaded with shavings for now, and will transition to straw nests after all the girls start to lay eggs. This was the first laid in the box.
Folks on social media guessed the large green egg was a double yolk, but wouldn’t you know it was a triple yolk egg! What are the odds that our very first egg would be so special? Based on research, about 1 in 25 million.
Eric had seen other coop builders use PVC pipe for oyster shell supplementation, and now that they are laying, he added one to the run. it is a 36″ piece of two inch diameter pipe, with one street elbow and one 45 degree fitting. An entire bag of ground shells fit with room to spare.
The girls also get to enjoy some new toys and distractions in the run, via a swing, xylophone, and veggy bag.
