House Hacking Project: Down Time

Improvement projects go smoothly and on schedule most of the time, but what happens when a snag is encountered? Having your toilet in the bathtub, or all of your kitchen appliances in the family room waiting for flooring or any other issue is a drag. So what does one do?

Waiting for cements or adhesives to cure is usually a time and temperature issue. Having a “set” is critical to the longevity of the job, and rushing at this stage can ruin the whole project. Patience is key, despite the major inconvenience that may result. Having encountered these delays on previous upgrades, the best bet is to relax. Changing your routine in the short term will pay off!

Another aspect of improvements is the storing of tools and materials. On larger projects, the backyard and garage can be inundated for weeks or even months with stacks of wood, tile, cement, sinks, fixtures, cabinets, saws, air compressors and construction detritus.

This picture shows the last 25% of materials of a fence replacement,  30 boxes of tile, and dozens of bags of concrete and thin set. Not shown is the massive stack of tile backer board and cases of screws. So much for using the patio…

You get a sense of accomplishment as the project gets closer to completion: all that is left is to remount the toilet and install the new baseboards.
